Autonomy - State Estimation Engineer
$150k – $200k/yr Torrance, US on-site full time mid Jul 15, 2025
About this role
Who we are
Neros is a defense technology company rebuilding America’s drone industrial base. We design and manufacture high-performance unmanned systems that are tested in combat, iterated at startup speed, and built at massive scale. Our team culture is fast, hands-on, and obsessed with closing the gap between design and deployment.
As drones transform the character of warfare, Neros is delivering the systems the West needs to compete on the modern battlefield and deter the adversaries of democracy. We’re hiring engineers, operators, and builders who want to move fast, take on extreme ownership, and get capability into the hands of warfighters in months, not years.
What you will be doing
The Autonomy State Estimation Engineer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing state estimation algorithms to run onboard drones. This role involves working closely with hardware and software teams to ensure robust and reliable state estimation under a variety of operational conditions.
Responsibilities
Designing and implementing state estimation algorithms, including sensor fusion techniques for IMUs, GPS, cameras, and other onboard sensors
Developing real-time software to run estimation algorithms on embedded systems
Testing and validating state estimation solutions in both simulated and real-world drone environments
Debugging and improving estimation performance under challenging conditions such as sensor noise, environmental disturbances, and hardware constraints
Collaborating with autonomy, controls, and perception teams to integrate state estimation with navigation and flight systems
Staying up-to-date
You should have the following
3+ years of experience developing state estimation algorithms for robotics, drones, or similar system
Strong knowledge of sensor fusion techniques such as Kalman filters, extended Kalman filters (EKF), or particle filters
Proficiency in programming languages such as C++ or Python
Experience implementing algorithms on embedded systems or real-time platforms
Familiarity with sensor technologies like IMU, GPS, cameras, and lidar
Strong mathematical and analytical skills, particularly in linear algebra, probability, and optimization
Experience with simulation tools and frameworks (e.g., Gazebo, Mujoco, etc)
US Salary Range
$150,000 - $200,000 USD
The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations.
