About the Role: As our Buyer – Bike, you will own the full product assortment strategy across Backcountry, Competitive Cyclist, Steep & Cheap, and our marketplace channels, with direct accountability for gross margin, vendor relationships, and inventory performance in the cycling category.
You will develop and execute seasonal sourcing strategies, negotiate terms with key vendor partners, and translate consumer trend data into compelling, on-brand product stories that drive conversion and customer loyalty. Success at 6–12 months looks like a healthy, well-turned inventory position, stronger vendor partnerships with measurable margin improvement, and a clearly differentiated bike assortment that outperforms category benchmarks.
This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.
What You'll Do: Develop and execute comprehensive sourcing strategies for bike products to ensure a diverse, high-quality merchandise assortment aligned with financial targets.
Build and nurture strategic relationships with vendors; negotiate pricing, terms, and key buys to maximize gross margin and support differentiated product stories.
Research trends continuously, partner with merchandising, and curate compelling, on-brand product offerings that drive customer engagement.
Secure advantageous pricing and volume discounts while upholding competitive customer pricing and profitability targets.
Manage inventory levels and stock health; collaborate with planning for optimal turns, minimal stockouts, and efficient management of excess inventory.
Lead quality standard enforcement and regular supplier and product audits, ensuring compliance with company and customer expectations.
Leverage sales data, trend analysis, and consumer analytics to forecast demand and develop data-driven procurement plans.
Partner with Planning on seasonal budgets, forecasting, and KPI reporting to ensure alignment with business objectives.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Creative, and Operations to develop promotions and initiatives that drive brand engagement and revenue growth.
Share knowledge and best practices with junior buying staff, contributing to a results-oriented, accountable team culture.
Monitor key KPIs, buying trends, and vendor metrics; use reporting platforms to detect trends and prescribe action plans that maximize profitability.
Required Qualifications: 5+ years of buying experience, ideally within cycling retail or a closely related outdoor category.
Demonstrated record of strategic sourcing, vendor management, and negotiation success with measurable margin outcomes.
Advanced analytical skills; fluency in Excel and experience with purchasing, planning, and reporting systems.
Strong inventory management background and proficiency with procurement software and demand forecasting tools.
Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills for both vendor and cross-functional collaboration.
Deep understanding of the cycling industry, key brands, and evolving consumer preferences.
