What You’ll Do:
In the Battery Controls Engineer role, you will define, validate, implement, and verify high voltage battery charging and thermal management algorithms for the Midnight eVTOL aircraft. The Battery Controls Engineer deliverables will span all phases of the product development life cycle: from initial concept design through to final certification.
Develop and optimize advanced control algorithms for high voltage battery charging and thermal management functionality
Validate control software through SIL (Software-in-the-Loop), MIL (Model-in-the-Loop), HIL (Hardware-in-the-loop), and aircraft-level integration testing to ensure system reliability under all operating and environmental conditions
Investigate lab, flight, and field data to troubleshoot complex issues, refine algorithms, and continuously improve charging performance
Work closely with hardware, software, and systems engineering teams to define charge control subsystem requirements
What You Need:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field
3+ years of experience with battery management system or charge control development
Comprehensive understanding of BMS principles, algorithms, and functionalities
Experience with Model-Based Design tools (MATLAB/Simulink/Stateflow)
Understanding of closed-loop control theory and thermodynamics
Familiarity with automotive communication networks such as CAN, LIN, or Ethernet. Experience with Vector tools (e.g., CANalyzer, CANape) is highly preferred
Self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
Collaborative mindset, willingness to step in and support where needed
Passion for learning and problem solving
Bonus Qualifications:
Understanding of battery cell chemistry behaviors and experience with electrical equivalent circuit models
Understanding of high-voltage vehicle or aircraft architectures
Experience with new product development in regulated industries (e.g., aviation, medical devices)
Experience with DO-178C software verification and ARP4754 development process
Experience with ISO 15118 and SAE J1772 standards
Experience with Agile development methods
Familiarity with or a passion for aviation
