Senior Embedded Software Engineer
$130k – $163k/yr Cambridge, US on-site full time senior May 8, 2026
About this role
We are looking for an embedded software engineer to join the IoT group that builds the software for the microcontroller-based sensor hardware designed and manufactured in-house. Our products offer an interesting engineering challenge: microcontrollers with just a few hundred kilobytes of RAM and code space must collect data from sensors such as accelerometers and GPS, communicate with back-end systems over the Internet and nearby devices with Bluetooth, perform over-the-air upgrades with new firmware, and manage cryptographically-secured storage – all while using so little power that they can run for years on a battery.
CMT is looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to help us change the world. CMT has helped protect over 65 million drivers and prevent over 126,000 crashes worldwide. We build AI to solve some of the most difficult challenges in mobility — understanding and reducing risk, detecting crashes, and getting people life-saving help. The problems are hard. The impact is real. No matter your role, your work will matter at CMT.
Responsibilities:
You will be collaborating with colleagues in the firmware group as we build new features and entirely new products together: deciding on the right software architecture, writing code and tests, measuring key metrics such as power use, and keeping the codebase healthy in the face of increasing complexity. You will participate in the entire design process as our software group negotiates with product managers and hardware engineers to find the intersection between what’s technically feasible and what customers want.
Complete any additional tasks as they arise
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience and/or certification in a related field
4+ years of relevant professional work experience
Absolute fluency in C, C++, and Python programming
Strong experience with systems software issues – e.g., race conditions, memory management
Experience working at the boundary of hardware and software – e.g., interrupt handling, device driver development, bringing up untested hardware
Comfortable with the Linux command-line
Comfortable with git
Track record of writing clean, readable, testable code
Be nice. We’re nice, and it’s not fun to work with people who aren’t
Have a “leave things better than you found them” philosophy. For example: If you’re adding a new feature and discover that it would be cleaner to refactor some code first, do the refactor
Good engineering taste: for example, finding the right balance of spending time on code health vs. making forward progress on new features in the face of deadline pressure
Nice to Haves:
Experience with one or more RTOS platforms (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar) including task management, synchronization primitives, and real-time scheduling
Experience with ARM Cortex-M families specifically (e.g., STM32, Nordic nRF, Infineon PSoC, Microchip SAM)
Proficiency with hardware debugging tools — JTAG/SWD debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and power profilers
Comfortable reading schematics, datasheets, and reference manuals
Experience with embedded build systems, cross-compilation toolchains, and linker scripts
Experience with platform or MCU migration projects, including hardware bring-up on new silicon
Background in electrical engineering or hands-on PCB-level debugging
Familiarity with secure boot, firmware signing, and hardware security modules
Experience with BLE 5.x specifications and protocol stack porting
Experience with Amazon Sidewalk, LoRa/LoRaWAN, or cellular (LTE-M, NB-IoT)
Knowledge of EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) or similar regulatory compliance frameworks
Experience with devicetree, Kconfig, or similar hardware abstraction mechanisms
Contributions to open-source embedded projects (Zephyr, FreeRTOS ecosystem, etc.)
Compensation and Benefits:
Fair and competitive salary based on skills and experience, and annual performance bonus
Equity may be awarded in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs)
Medical, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance, matching 401k, short-term & long-term disability and parental leave
