Position Title: Controller Position Location: Remote – work virtually anywhere in the United States Job Summary The Controller supports operations by managing firm‐wide financial performance through communicating financial results with the Executive Team / owners / partners, presenting financial forecasting models to the Executive Team / owners / partners, assisting the Executive Team / owners / partners in developing an annual budget; maintaining the annual budget, overseeing AP, AR and payroll functions, procuring and maintaining insurance policies and ensuring compliance with annual insurance audits, working with outside tax accountant when necessary for tax preparation and financial planning and reporting and remitting various taxes including sales & use, property, franchise and federal income taxes. The Controller will be self-directed on day-to-day work and independently perform most responsibilities. In coordination with the Executive Team, the Controller will lead department initiatives of complex scope and broader programs, and coordinate activities of other personnel. Assists in the development of policies and procedures. The Controller will communicate and operate in line with organizational goals and values, as well as departmental objectives. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Financial Reporting (25%) Participate in all phases of the preparation of complete, accurate and timely financial statements and reports for management staff, all internal and external stakeholders, including external auditors and financial institutionsPrepare and review monthly financial reports for the Executive Team and Management Teams for review and discussionProvide any supporting schedules or reconciliations as requestedGuide financial decisions by applying company policies and procedures to current economic landscapeManage the monthly closing process on all aspects of the general ledger (including monthly billing, time recording and reporting and supervision and review of staff and output)Coordinate the preparation of reports and schedules to support annual tax filingsEnsure transactions are recorded, documented, reviewed and supported in accordance with company policies and GAAPEnsure the accurate and timely preparation and delivery of all regular and ad hoc management reports Budgeting / Forecasting (25%) Participate in all financial planning mattersParticipate in budget development and administrationContinuously review accounting and finance processes and procedures to maximize profitability Create and maintain a forecast, at a minimum monthlyProvide analysis of financial performance as compared to budgets and / or forecastsAnalyze historical data to assist with annual budgeting and monthly forecastingOversee complex analyses such as reviewing company-wide chargeability and expenses and determining the cost structure or profitability of a department / project, break-even analysis, overhead rate review, fee structure reviewReview total Company budgets and all major capital expenditures and establish a profit plan / capital plan method and guideline with preparation based on management input General Accounting (20%) Develop, implement and maintain financial controls and guidelines, policies and proceduresDevelop and support short and long-term operational strategiesEnsure sales and use tax complianceManage the external audit process / coordinate with outside auditors, accountants and legal for both financial and tax reportingManage the maintenance and reconciliation of a variety of ledgers for multiple entities, review and correct accounting transactions to ensure accurate recording, balancing and classification of income and expenditures to proper accounts in accordance with GAAP Oversee reconciliation of intercompany transactions monthlyReview and verify the reconciliation of bank statements, fixed assets, accounts payable and receivables, payroll accruals and functions, prepaid assets and accrued expenses on a monthly basis. Oversee continuous audit and reconciliation procedures to ensure the validity of balance sheet accounts.Advise and counsel Management on accounting, financial and business matters affecting the operation and / or direction of the CompanyPlan and direct accounting department activities and review accounting reports to ensure accuracy, timeliness and usefulness of resulting informationPerform complex analyses such as reviewing company-wide chargeability and expenses and determining the cost structure or profitability of a department / project, break-even analysis, overhead / G&A rate review, fee structure review Leadership / Staff Management (15%) Provide technical assistance and training to accounting staffRecruit, select, develop and train a competent staff to achieve department / company goals and objectivesEnsure prompt and accurate responses to all client, vendor, owner or staff inquiriesMentor associates and assist with training and development to create a learning and growing environmentProvide feedback to staff via Performance Appraisals and make recommendations to Management for staffing changes, promotions, salary adjustments, bonuses Organizational Development and Continuous Improvement of Policies and Procedures (15%) Support upgrade to Deltek VantagePoint Responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to the activities of the accounting department; recommend changes in accounting systems and proceduresContribute to organizational training and standards development Oversee strategic planning for the accounting departmentOversee establishment and implementation of short- and long-range departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating proceduresMaintain operational and internal controls over accounting operationsDevelop processes and business partner relationships with internal and external groups that will improve the flow of financial information within the company Completion of Assigned Tasks and Deliverables on Time and on Budget Other Related Duties as Assigned POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ADVANCED LEVEL FOR ALL THE FOLLOWING) Working knowledge of general accounting / finance body of knowledgeKnowledge of GAAP and their application to a variety of accounting transactions and problemsConstruction industry Controller experience required, including experience with project-based accounting, job cost reporting, WIP, and revenue recognition; general contractor or MEP contractor background preferred.Working knowledge of relevant local, state and federal laws requiredKnowledge of financial research and report preparation methods and techniques as well as the ability to prepare a variety of complex financial statements, reports and analysesMust possess strong accounts payable and receivable knowledge to function independently and collaboratively with co-workers Skilled using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams)Ability to communicate verbally and in writing technical and non-technical informationAbility to maintain high standards of confidentiality and honestyAbility to analyze complex, identify problems, evaluate alternatives and implement effective solutionsAbility to accurately prepare and maintain records, files and reportsAbility to work under pressure and meet close deadlines Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of othersOrganizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously PHYSICAL DEMANDS The following physical demands must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
