Propulsion Engineer, Compression Systems Aerodynamics and Design
$107k – $203k/yr Centennial, US on-site full time mid Nov 12, 2025
About this role
Boom Supersonic’s mission is to make the world dramatically more accessible through a renaissance in supersonic flight. Boom is developing the Symphony supersonic engine, which powers the Overture supersonic airliner and the Superpower natural gas turbine for AI. Overture will fly at twice the speed of today’s subsonic jets over water and 50% faster over land with Boomless Cruise.
Start the Best Work of Your Career at Boom
At Boom, our remarkably small team built the groundbreaking XB-1 supersonic jet and designed the world's fastest airliner Overture. What made it possible? Exceptional people—driven, curious, and committed to building what’s never been built before.
Now, we’re applying that same approach to Symphony—the first jet engine purpose-built for sustainable supersonic flight. It will be the fastest development of a large-scale propulsion system in aviation history, and our compressor team is at the heart of it.
As a Compressor Design Engineer, you’ll work shoulder to shoulder with aircraft designers, systems leads, and test engineers to architect the front end of Symphony—from concept through certification. You’ll design, optimize, and build high-performance fan and compression systems that make supersonic travel possible. And you’ll be there when it all comes together—when the Symphony prototype roars to life on the test stand this year, and takes flight just a few years from now.
If you’re the kind of engineer who chases understanding, thrives in the unknown, and gets energy from building what’s never been built—you’ll fit right in.
Role Overview
As part of the Propulsion Team, you will:
Lead the development of the Symphony compression system and take ownership of at least one area: High Pressure Compressor, Low Pressure Compressor or FanDesign airfoils and flowpath via CFD analysis Develop 1D meanline models, design blading for airfoils, develop performance maps, spec out and participate in rig tests, assess as-built hardware, and influence how these things affect the overall Overture aircraft and Symphony integrated propulsion systemAdvocate for component rigs when deemed necessary, analyze rig and engine test data, recommend courses of actionContribute to developing and integrating toolchains and processes, including multi-disciplinary workflows and automation that fully integrate engine and propulsion analyses with airframe developmentBeyond these specific things, there are many opportunities to get involved in all aspects of Symphony engine development and Overture propulsion system integration, including fabrication and testing. Bring your curiosity!
Ideal Candidate
Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related fieldProficiency in Python or similar programming languagesDesign experience in axial turbomachinery (including meanline and 3D steady and unsteady CFD)Ability to navigate through CAD to support module integration efforts in the engineExperience with high speed compressor airfoil design and tuningExperience working with engine cycle analysis tools such as NPSS or PyCycleWillingness to both speak and listen, to give opinions and receive opinions, to consider all the data and be part of building the team consensus to move forward
What Will Set You Apart
Component or module ownership experience in a turbomachinery program or productSupersonic jet engine design experiencePart 33 commercial certification experience Aerodynamics or Structures lead on the development of high speed and highly loaded turbomachineryAirfoil tuning and aero-mechanics related analysis such as unsteady mutli-blade row CFD, flutter analysisExperience with operability analysis and assessment at the engine levelExperience analyzing secondary flow systems inside enginesBackground in developing design tools, methods or processesTesting and data-reduction experienceExperience with Axstream or ADS turbomachinery softwareA strong desire to avoid bureaucracy and move fast in a dynamic environment
We’re hiring at multiple levels of experience—whether you’re early in your career or bring decades of design expertise, we’d love to hear from you.
