Role Overview
The Millwright & Glulam Line Technician is a hybrid technical role responsible for both the mechanical reliability and operational performance of the new glulam production line.
During the installation and commissioning phase, this role plays a lead hands-on role in equipment setup, alignment, and startup of key systems including the sorting line, finger jointing line, planer, and material handling systems.
Following commissioning, the role transitions into a dual-function position, combining millwright responsibilities (preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and mechanical improvements) with active operation of production equipment. The successful candidate will support plant uptime while contributing directly to throughput, quality, and continuous improvement on the line.
This role is best suited to a highly practical, mechanically strong individual who is comfortable moving between trades work and production operation in a dynamic manufacturing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Installation & Commissioning (Initial Phase)
Assist with installation, alignment, and setup of glulam production equipmentSupport commissioning of:
-Sorting Line
-Finger jointing system
-Lamella planer
-Material handling systems
Troubleshoot startup issues in collaboration with installer team, engineers, and internal teamsPerform mechanical adjustments to achieve required tolerances, alignment, and performanceSupport testing, calibration, and early-stage process stabilization
Mechanical Maintenance & Reliability
Diagnose and repair mechanical issues across production equipment including planers, conveyors, presses, and finger jointing systemsPerform preventive maintenance tasks: lubrication, inspection, minor adjustmentsEnsure proper alignment of shafts, rollers, bearings, and drive systemsPerform welding and light fabrication (guards, brackets, supports, repairs)Coordinate with external vendors or additional maintenance resources when requiredRespond to breakdowns and support rapid recovery of production
Production Operation & Line Support
Operate production equipment during assigned shifts, while providing additional coverage during operator absences, bottlenecks, or high-demand periodsSupport machine setup, changeovers, and parameter adjustmentsUse mechanical knowledge to optimize machine performance, reduce downtime, and improve consistencyWork closely with other line technicians to ensure smooth material flow and stable operation
Process Improvement & Optimization
Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability, changeover efficiency, material yield, throughputSupport implementation of mechanical or process improvementsContribute to troubleshooting recurring production or quality issuesParticipate in continuous improvement
Safety & Compliance
Follow and enforce all safety procedures, including Lockout/TagoutEnsure all guards, emergency stops, and safety systems are functionalMaintain a clean and organized work environmentPromote a strong safety culture across both maintenance and production activities
Documentation & Communication
Maintain accurate maintenance and repair logsDocument recurring issues and corrective actionsCommunicate clearly with production, quality, and management teamsProvide input on spare parts, tooling, and equipment upgrades

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Attributes
Certified Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) – Red Seal or provincial equivalentMinimum 5 years of experience in an industrial, manufacturing, preferably in wood processing or automated production linesStrong hands-on experience with:
-Mechanical systems (hydraulics, bearings, drives, conveyors, alignment)
-Welding and light fabrication
-Equipment installation and commissioning
Experience operating or supporting production machinery is strongly preferredComfortable working in both maintenance and production roles as requiredFamiliarity with glulam or timber processing equipment is a strong assetStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environmentProficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings, schematics, and mechanical specificationsKnowledge of safety regulations and workplace procedures in a heavy industrial settingExperience supervising and training employeesFall protection and confined space certification preferred
Schedule and Working Conditions
Ability to work 7:30-5:15, Monday – Thursday, with a 15-minute paid coffee break and a 30-minute unpaid lunch each day, and every second Friday from 7:30-4:00Ability to work on-site at Spearhead headquarters On-call availability for emergency equipment repairs outside regular hoursManual dexterity to operate machines and hand tools on a regular basisAbility to stand and move around the shops for work shiftsAbility to work in a workshop with exposure to dust, chemicals, and noise using required PPEAbility to move and carry materials up to 30 lbs on a regular basis Ability to travel domestically and internationally on an occasional basis to meet machine suppliers
Compensation
