THE ROLE:
The Group Project Accountant plays a dual role within the Finance function:
Co‑ordinating, overseeing and getting involved in the detail of current finance projects to ensure delivery is aligned to agreed business needs, controls, and priorities; and
Helping to lead and deliver finance improvement initiatives, designing and embedding improved end‑to‑end finance processes enabled by Workday Financials.
The role acts as the bridge between Finance, the Finance Systems team, and the wider business, ensuring that both near‑term project activity and longer‑term transformation are governed, prioritized, and delivered based on clear business value. Examples of live pipeline projects include acquisition integration, onboarding of entities onto workday, intercompany clean up, legal entity rationalization and month end close efficiencies.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Coordination of Current Finance Projects (Delivery & Governance)
Act as the process and finance lead across in‑flight finance projects and enhancements, ensuring alignment to agreed business objectives.
Own, drive and personally deliver finance projects and changes
Coordinate project activity across Finance, Finance Systems, and third parties, ensuring:
Clear scope and ownership
Documented business requirements
Agreed success measures and benefits
Ensure that project outputs are:
Consistent with Group process standards
Appropriately controlled and auditable
Fit for operation post‑implementation
Maintain a central view of finance change activity, dependencies, and impacts across process areas.
Support prioritization of work through agreed governance forums, ensuring delivery is driven by business need rather than system or technical preference.
Finance Transformation & Process Improvement
Deliver tangible improvements such as:
Reduced manual journals and reconciliations
Reduction in use of Excel to calculate or prepare journals
Faster month‑end close
Improved straight‑through processing
Stronger preventative controls embedded in process design
Build and track benefits cases (efficiency, control, quality, user experience) and conduct post‑implementation reviews.
Workday Financials Enablement (in partnership with Finance Systems)
Work closely with the Finance Systems team to translate business and process needs into effective Workday Financials solutions.
Provide functional input into Workday configuration, including:
Business processes and approvals
Journal processing and automation
Master data and governance
Security and controls
Support Workday releases and enhancements, ensuring finance processes remain stable, controlled, and scalable.
Stakeholder Management, Change & Team Leadership
Act as a trusted partner to senior Finance stakeholders, balancing delivery of current priorities with longer‑term transformation goals.
Lead workshops and design sessions to build alignment on future‑state processes.
Support change adoption through clear communication, training materials, and operational handover.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING:
Fully qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA or equivalent)
Strong hands‑on experience across core finance processes (P2P, O2C, R2R, Fixed Assets, Intercompany)
Practical experience of Workday Financials in a finance environment (highly desirable)
Proven track record of delivering business process re‑engineering within Finance, with clear examples of outcomes achieved
Experience working in close partnership with Finance Systems teams across the full change lifecycle
Strong understanding of finance controls, audit requirements, and governance
Balanced mindset: Comfortable managing near‑term delivery while helping to shape future‑state transformation
Process‑led thinker: Sees systems as enablers, not drivers
Willing to get into the detail and ‘get hands dirty’ on projects
Commercially focused: Prioritizes work based on business value and risk
Collaborative and credible: Builds trust across Finance, IT, and the wider business
Pragmatic and outcomes‑driven: Focuses on sustainable improvement, not theoretical design
Structured and disciplined: High standards of documentation, governance, and follow‑through
